| If I plan to build in the Spring of 2007, when should I contact you? |
Now is the best time to get things into design. If your project is on schedule for Spring it is a good idea to start the log planning no later than the Fall before (approximately 4 or 5 months). This will allow ample time for any modifications you may need to make to your floorplan or overall design.
Once things are finalized we can get the production of your log home finished to fit your spring schedule. |
| How much will a log home cost? |
Because there are many factors involved, this is a difficult question to answer. Determinate factors include log size, style, quality, fixtures, appliances, and flooring, etc. You have ultimate control over the final cost of your home by working closely with your contractor. It is true that log homes can be very competitive with custom conventional homes of like quality. |
| What about financing? |
This is no different than financing any other home. We can be of some assistance in recommending sources of financing. |
| Does Neville Log Homes build the house? |
We do not actually construct the home. We recommend that you find a general contractor licensed in your building area or, act as your own general contractor. You or they will know all of the good subcontractors such as plumbers and electricians. If your general contractor needs an experienced "log man", we have a relationship with some very qualified "log men" that will come to your site and work with your contractor to stack the log portion of your home. We have found that most of our clients are looking for a custom home, so our packages allow you to work with your general contractor and select your own finishing products. Because of this philosophy no two of our houses are precisely the same. |
| What about doors, windows, and roofing materials? |
We prefer not to sell these items in order to enable you to have total flexibility in the design of your home. We will work with your contractor to design your selections into the plans. We have found this to be the most economical method for our clients. |
| Can I customize your floor plans?
|
Yes, About 95% of our homes are either customized from our standard plans or are created by our clients with the help of our in house architectural design team. You also have the option to provide your own plans designed by yourself or someone else. "What species of wood do you use and how is it dried?" see "products" page. |
| Are your logs milled or hand-crafted?
|
All of our logs are machined using a full bearing Swedish cope or full round chink style method of construction. A machined log gives you a consistent diameter the entire length of the log (7" - 18" diameter up to 60' long). A "hand hewn" finish is available for a more rustic appearance. We "peel" only the exposed surfaces so that the connections maintain a tight seal. |
| How long will it take for me to get my logs from you? |
We can usually produce logs within 60 days of final plans. The planning process is the key to quick turnaround. |
| How do I get started with Neville Log Homes? |
To begin plan work we require a plan deposit in an amount determined by the square footage of the project. Once preliminary plans are completed, you sign approval of them and final plans are then produced (usually within 3 weeks). In order to be scheduled in our mill for production we require a 50% log deposit that can be paid at any time during the plan process. This deposit reserves an available date for production. The balance of the package price is due at the time of shipment to your home site. |
| Is freight included in the package price? |
All orders are f.o.b. Victor,Montana. You will be responsible for the cost of freight to your site. We are happy to assist in arranging transportation. This is a relatively minor expense in the overall cost of your home. |
| What is included in your log home package? |
Our packages include your construction blue-prints, programmed wall logs, gable logs, log floor joists, log purlins for the roof system, log staircase, and covered porch posts, headers, rafters, and purlins. On our Swedish cope systems the foam gasket material, plugs, washers and lag screws are also included. |
| Are the logs pre-drilled for wiring? |
No, this procedure is done by the log stacker at the job site to ensure accuracy according to the construction blueprints. |
| What are the logs treated with, and is this done before construction? |
The logs are treated after the home is "Dried in". This method is preferred because the interior and exterior treatment materials differ from one another. After the home is "dried in" the appropriate material is then applied. There are many different types of materials available. These vary in price, quality, color, and method of application. Your salesman or contractor can help you with the appropriate selection for your unique situation. |
| Can I build my home over a basement?
|
Yes, you can build over a basement or any conventional floor system. For ease of wiring, plumbing, and HVAC we recommend a raised floor system but, it is not required. (See article) |
| Do log homes have termite and insect problems? |
Not any more so than conventional homes. Use the same extermination measures as with any conventional home. (See article) |
| What is the R Value of a log home? |
Logs have tiny cells in the wood that trap air which naturally provides one of the most efficient insulative qualities available (See Oct 1998 Feature Article). Additionally, we provide a memory foam gasket in the "cope" for added protection against air, water, and insect infiltration. |
